Location and Natural Context
The project is located in the Azores archipelago, on São Miguel Island, in the town of Furnas – a region with a unique geological character, shaped within an active volcanic caldera. The area is subject to frequent low-magnitude seismic activity (2–4 on the Richter scale). The landscape is defined by geothermal springs, volcanic lakes, and a soil composition rich in basaltic and trachytic rocks. The climate is mild, with an average annual temperature of 16–17°C, approximately 140 mm of average monthly rainfall, and a constant humidity level ranging between 70–80%.

Architectural Intervention
The existing house was severely affected by the climatic and geological conditions, both inside and out, rendering it nearly impossible to restore. In response, the architectural proposal retains the original footprint and massing, while introducing a new concept adapted to the natural setting and contemporary living standards.
Site and Spatial Concept
Situated on a secluded plateau at the top of a hill, the house enjoys exceptional panoramic views over the island and its lush vegetation. This privileged positioning allowed for an open volumetric approach, incorporating large glazed surfaces—even in private spaces such as bedrooms and bathrooms—thus creating a continuous and intimate dialogue between interior and exterior.
Spatial Organization
The house features an open plan layout, with no interior load-bearing walls, and its functions are distributed across two levels: ground floor and upper floor.
The main entrance leads into a vestibule connected to the day area – a generous open space of 150 sqm comprising the living room and kitchen, oriented to the southeast. Expansive windows flood the space with natural light, while a central fireplace becomes the focal point around which various relaxation areas are organized. From here, one can access the outdoor terrace and the infinity pool.
On the ground floor, a recessed entrance and a green interior courtyard break up the floor plan, clearly separating the day area from the night area. This more private zone includes two bedrooms, each with en-suite bathrooms and views into the dense surrounding vegetation.
Upstairs, three fully glazed bedrooms and a relaxation area are arranged around the inner courtyard. Each bathroom is conceived as a private retreat, with a glass wall opening toward the natural landscape and a strategically placed freestanding bathtub designed for a calming, immersive experience. Two of the bedrooms have direct access to a suspended walkway that serves as a scenic belvedere—a bridge inviting one to pause and connect deeply with the surrounding nature.
