The challenges of this project emerged from the very beginning, starting with the analysis of the site’s position. The southern side features a high party wall, blocking the multiple benefits related to natural light, thermal comfort, and energy efficiency. The eastern side also has a party wall, while the northern side, which should have hosted the main facade, does not allow for the design of large glazed spaces.
Our response to this challenge was to create a series of courtyards, including one interior, to ensure natural light for all spaces. We paid special attention to the urban fabric and the impact of the main facade on it. The building was designed as a present but elegant element in the existing context, highlighting only one level—the first floor—while the other two levels are slightly recessed, thus reducing the height’s impact on the street perspective and lightening the weight of the facade.
